¿Cuándo te consideraste por primera vez feminista?

A finales de la década de 1960, con la segunda ola del feminismo. Antes de eso, el término no existía. Era una activista política y era natural que, una vez esa forma de activismo surgiera, yo formara parte de ella.

Además de feminista ¿de qué otra manera te identificas?

Estoy muy mayor como para políticas de identidad. Creo que esas cuestiones de identidad son para gente de 20 a 30 años, no para alguien en la setentena. Soy quien soy en el mundo.

Hace poco publicaste una entrada de blog para el Boston Review, escribiendo sobre la discriminación de género a la que te enfrentaste en la academia. Hacia el final de la pieza mencionas que el trabajo de las feministas en la academia aún no se ha hecho en cuestiones como el cuidado de los niños y la maternidad. ¿Qué ves como posibles obstáculos que mi generación tendrá que enfrentar? ¿Identificar algún trabajo más que hay que hacer?

Creo que todavía hay discriminación residual. Pero mucho más del tipo sutil de esa que la gente ni siquiera sabe que está sucediendo. Hay un estudio que se realiza cada 10 años (hubo uno recientemente realizado en Yale) donde presentaron una solicitud de trabajo de asistente de investigación a un panel de prueba y fue la misma concesión, pero en un caso usaron el nombre de una mujer, y en el otro caso usaron el nombre de un hombre. Tanto hombres como mujeres aplicaron la instancia más alta cuando tenía el nombre de un hombre. Todavía existe una especie de punto de vista predeterminado por el que los hombres son mejores en las cosas, especialmente en el campo de la ciencia. Y las mujeres tienen esa visión subconsciente también. […]

Eso penetra en la confianza de las mujeres jóvenes, en la medida en que los hombres siguen criados para creer en sí mismos en comparación con las mujeres jóvenes, que tardan más tiempo en tener confianza en sus habilidades. Todavía hay muchas cosas individuales, estructurales y pedagógicas. Todavía no se pueden encontrar suficientes tipos diferentes de modelos femeninos en las ciencias. Ciertamente hay más profesoras en las ciencias de las que solía haber, pero esas mujeres aún enfrentan problemas, especialmente si quieren tener hijos.

Siempre vuelvo a cómo las estructuras de las universidades no apoyan a las familias. Las familias jóvenes pasan por un momento difícil.
